Though Twitter doesn’t get as much recognition as Facebook, it is still a powerful social networking site that has many benefits for business use. It’s a great place to connect with peers and thought leaders in your particular industry who can be a valuable resource to you. And, of course, it’s a great place to connect with customers and prospects as well.

Let’s take a look at eight best practices for using Twitter for business:

  1. Share…
Share photos and behind the scenes info about your business. Even better, give a glimpse of developing projects and events. Users come to Twitter to get and share the latest, so give it to them! Share great tips, advice and your latest blog articles.
  2. Listen…
Regularly monitor the comments about your company, brand, and products. There are many tools you can use for monitoring. My favorite is Hootsuite, which offers a great way to manage all of your social media accounts in one place as well.
  3. Ask…
Ask questions of your followers to glean valuable insights and show that you are listening. It’s a great way to get instant feedback and great recommendations.
  4. Respond…
Respond to compliments and feedback in real time. This is a powerful way to connect with your customers and build a reputation for being courteous and responsive.
  5. Reward…
Tweet updates about special offers, discounts and time-sensitive deals. People love deals and will often share these will their network of followers, thus helping to spread the word for you. It’s also a great way to drive traffic to your website and create buzz about your company or brand.
  6. Demonstrate…
Demonstrate wider leadership and know-how. Reference articles and links about the bigger picture as it relates to your business. Establish yourself and your company as thought leaders in your industry.
  7. Champion…
Champion your stakeholders. Retweet and reply publicly to great tweets posted by your followers and customers.
  8. Establish…
Establish the right voice. Twitter users tend to prefer a direct, genuine, and of course, a likable tone from your business, but think about your voice as you Tweet. How do you want your business to appear to the Twitter community?
